Bright flushes of color expand across the cream-colored pages in Fhuiae Kim’s Yellow Colored Allergy. The imagery bears a retro feel with its emphasis on geometric shapes and patterns, and illustrates a story of sensual brilliance that takes place in a hotel’s swimming pool. Whereas the text is written in Korean, the evocative nature of the drawings manages to convey a narrative independent of the writing, making for a trans-literary experience compressed into a pocket-sized edition.

‘IRUKA HOTEL’ 그래픽 노블 시리즈의 첫 번째 책입니다. ‘IRUKA HOTEL’은 혼자서만 목격할 수 있는 일들이 벌어지는 공간입니다. 이곳에서 벌어지는 첫 번째 이야기인 『bottle nose dolphin hotel』은 호텔의 한 방에 머물고 있는 네 명의 아이들이 무심코 만들어내는 반복되는 사건입니다. 이야기는 무한한 루핑(looping) 속에 갇히고 결말은 끝없이 반복됩니다.
IRUKA HOTEL is a space where things can be witnessed alone. The first story, Bottle Nose Dolphin Hotel, is a recurring event that four children staying in a hotel room inadvertently create. The story is stuck in an endless loop, and the ending endlessly repeats itself.

Bottle Nose Dolphin Hotel is a graphically refined and sleek edition that merges visual and textual material to tell a story. By playing with narrative elements of repetition and narrator-reader tension, Fhuiae Kim creates a brief but impactful tale that bears stylistic similarities to the work of Borges. A boy is trapped in a never-ending nightmare in which he watches his cousins get swept away by a tidal wave, whereby release from the events is granted only by the reader’s decision to create a new narrative. Supplementing the writing is simple and textural drawings rendered in a deep blue.

‘워드 샐러드’는 문법적으로 맞지 않거나 말의 뜻에 집중하지 않고 운율에 집중한 단어들을 나열하는 언어 방식인 ‘Word Salad’라는 개념으로부터 착안하여, 글과 그림이 상징과 내용을 가진 것이 아닌 하나의 오브제로서 시각적 유희를 즐길 수 있는 그림책입니다.
‘Word Salad’ is a form of communication for mentally debilitated people. They tend to deliver a jumble of words instead of sentences with grammatical clarity. With varying cadences and rhythm, the way these people speak and express defies all linguistic conventions. Regarding this aspect, I wanted to suggest a form of a picture book. This picture book will be a disordered array of words and images.
